Class of 2012

Posted May 2nd, 2012 in Berkner by Todd

Last night I got the chance to speak at the last Young Life club of the year. I wanted to make a top ten list of things to tell seniors. But I realized 10 things might be a lot….so instead I did a top 7 list. Seven things I wanted to tell them before they headed off on a new chapter and don’t get to come hear me talk every Monday. Haha. No but seriously.

So here they are:

7. A lot of effort to be good, but it only takes a little more effort to be GREAT.

God made you uniquely you. Don’t be wishing that you were the person next to you. Be the best you that you can be. He gifted you with specific gifts. And he wants you to use those gifts! Don’t settle for mediocrity, strive to be great in the areas he gifted you. Work Hard.

6. Your plan and picture for your life wont be what it is.

“In his heart, a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps” Proverbs 16:9

Case in point: My life is not what I had planned for myself. But God had a better plan for it. When things don’t go the way you planned, don’t stress. Its ok, God is in control (and He is a lot smarter than us J )

5. With number 6 comes number 5… Don’t take yourself so seriously

Life is going to happen. You will be thrown curveballs

Rely on Him for strength. He’s got all that you need.

4. Words hurt. How you treat people is important.

You will come into contact with people who are hard for you. You have the choice to love them. People will hurt you. You can hurt them back or offer forgiveness. Know the power that your words have on someone else. Forgiveness is always better

3. Community is important. Get plugged in with people you respect. Stay away from people who are destructive. If you are trying to follow Jesus, you gotta be a part of a community that wants to do that to. You will die on your own. We were meant to live in community with other people. If you don’t like your group now, guess what? Choose better this upcoming year.

2. Jesus loves you exactly where you are. And He loves you because He loves you. Let me say that again. He loves you because he loves you. Nothing you’ve done. He knows you. Knows where you’ve been. Knows your thoughts, and hopes and dreams.

But he doesn’t want you to stay there. He wants to live with you, walk with you.

1. Life is found in HIM and Him alone. You can look for life in other places and it might work for a while…but soon enough youll be feeling empty and alone.

Happiness is not found in success…its found in Christ

You were created for a purpose.

John 10:10 says that Jesus came to give you ABUNDANT life. You find that abundant life in Him.

Very thankful for our seniors and will be praying that in the new chapter they will put Christ first and trust His plan for their lives!

Marinated Steak

Posted April 18th, 2012 in Berkner by Todd
Last night senior Jake Murphy spoke at Young Life club. I love when students get a chance to speak at club because it really shows kids that following Christ in High School is a reality.
Jake shared that he had spent most of his life trying to be the “conductor” of the symphony of his life.
He said his life only made sense when He handed the baton over to Jesus.
He got to tell his fellow peers that he wasnt perfect, but God was good and loving and wanted him (and them) just where they were.
He said many times people seem to be happy eating Cheerios, when God has a marinated steak waiting for them. (I thought that was such a clever analogy)
The verse Jake shared was this one from Deuteronomy 6:5
Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
He said that God wants all of you. He wants to be in charge of your whole life, not just parts of it.
Kids listened intently to Jake last night. Jake is an example of Christ for his peers at Berkner High School by the way he lives his life and the way he serves others.

All Metro Young Life

Posted March 27th, 2012 in Berkner, Multicultural, Pearce, RAYL, Richardson by Todd

All Metro Young Life

Last night, close to 700 kids gathered from Allen, Sherman, Lovejoy, Plano, Frisco and Richardson for the annual All Metro Young Life Club.
It was a goal to be the biggest Young Life club in the country on Monday night, and I think we succeeded! Kids from all over the metroplex showed up to be a part of the fun! We sang loud songs, played games in the party cage with the rabbit and the hamster, and at the end of the night got to hear from Nick Manos, the Dallas Regional Director! Nick spoke about our desire to be known. How we were made for relationships, and made in the image of God. He shared the account in the bible about the leper. How Jesus reached out and touched the leper when no one else would. He encouraged kids to think about what Jesus would say to them right now in their life. He encouraged to kids to go to Jesus because Jesus longs to know them right where they are! And He cares and wants a relationship with them!
It was a fun night-and fun to get to be with kids from all over the metro-plex!
See video below to see 700 kids singing We are Young-

Berkner Bigger and Better

Posted March 8th, 2012 in Berkner by Todd

Our first annual “bigger and better” club was a success! For those of you who dont know what bigger and better club is, its hilarious. You divide kids into groups of 8-10 people. Each group starts with a paperclip. They have 45 minutes to go out into the neighborhood (on foot, staying together as a group) and get something bigger or better. The other rule is, you have to be able to keep the items you receive. So, groups go door to door asking for things. My group traded a paper clip for a candle, for a phone book, for a clock, for a couch!!!

Kids all rushed back in with their items by 830- On the list was: baby stroller, filing cabinet, a tv, a huge soccer goal, a cat!!!, a boyscout, a toilet… among other things! (Ive attached some pics to show you) The best part of last night was watching kids get to be kids! and one leader went with each group, and it was really fun to watch leaders be with kids!
Once things got settled down and we handed out prizes, I got to speak about the rich young ruler. How he had his list of things he had done, ways he had been good…but Jesus wanted his heart! I was shocked how quiet kids were after the craziness of the game!
Thanks for praying. Last night was encouraging to me, as well as a fun new tradition. Please pray that kids continue to show up, and for leaders to be in the lives of kids building relationships and sharing Christ!

Camp Money

Posted February 14th, 2012 in Berkner, Multicultural, Pearce, RAYL, Richardson, WyldLife by Todd

So there’s been some confusion in past years about camp money! We’re here to set the record straight and hopefully provide clearer understanding for you and your student.

Myth: “So… We’ve heard there is a scholarship fund for campers that need money”
Fact: There are no “scholarships” (free money) available for campers. You mean work is involved? YES, but don’t worry! It is really fun and it is with your Young Life friends, leaders and staff. So a fun time is guaranteed!

Myth: “So if my child has to work, can he/she just work off the entire camp cost?”
Fact: There are a lot of students that need help getting to camp this summer. We ask that you pay all that you can (without sacrificing on your bills, food, and other necessities) and we are committed to helping find work for your kid to earn the rest of their way there.

Yep. You heard right. We are COMMITTED to helping your kid get to camp!
You do you part, we will do ours and your kid is certain to have the best week of their lives.

Chicken Club at Berkner

Posted February 8th, 2012 in Berkner by Todd
Berkner had its second annual “Chicken Young Life” club this past monday night.
I was a fun club for sure- the live chickens were crazy! The kids played a game where the chickens had to get gift wrapped (dont worry, no chickens were hurt)
Two kids got eggs cracked on their heads, we sang songs about chickens, and it was just a stupid/silly night :)
I got to speak about Blind Bart (Mark 10)- how he was sitting on the roadside begging when Jesus came by- blind and alone.
I said it doesn’t matter where you’ve been, what you’ve done, what you are scared of, Jesus wants you to trust Him, to get up off the curb and go do life with Him. Because in Him is where life is found. He wants to give us life to the full. We have so many kids who have heard the stories about Jesus and who believe that they are true- but are scared to actually commit to living life with Him. They know a lot about Jesus but don’t KNOW Jesus
I told kids that it could scary, and unknown and might be a bit uncomfortable at first. But life with Christ is an adventure! and He wants a relationship with them! I encouraged kids to think about where they were.
I really really hurt for my kids searching for life in things that will never fulfill them!! Please pray for the Holy Spirit to be moving in mighty ways this week in the lives of kids.
(sorry I dont have any pictures, a chicken pooped on my camera :) )
Next week teacher Matt Rielly will be speaking! He said that if kids can get over 200 there he will dye his hair blonde!
Also, Frontier Ranch signups begin next week! Check out the camp section for all the information and to download a form.

YL Christmas Party

Posted December 18th, 2011 in Berkner, Multicultural, Pearce, RAYL, Richardson, WyldLife by Todd

It is always special to have our entire Richardson Area Young Life family (committee, leaders and staff) together to celebrate Christ’s birth. From incredible food to fun games and great conversation, the night is one to remember. We couldn’t begin to thank everyone that played a critical role in making the night all that it was. So we will say “Thank You” to committee and the friends of Young Life that spent countless hours making sure the details of the night were just right! It was a night like none other!

Here are a few pictures from the night:

Berkner Mr. Christmas Tree

Posted December 8th, 2011 in Berkner by Todd
Berkner Mr. Christmas Tree
Mr. Christmas tree is now an annual tradition that happens during the last club of the fall semester. Its a super fun night that involves lots of planning and prep from each grade. One guy from every grade competed to earn the title of Mr. Christmas Tree 2011. They competed in four categories- Talent, Interview, Swimsuit and Tree. Parents and teachers showed up to be the judges! All contestants brought their A game, but in the end, the Senior contestant, Jake Murphy took home the victory.
It was a super fun night full of laughs. See below for pictures of the night!
And the end of the night, Kate got to share a bit about what we have spent the whole semester talking about. She shared that Christmas is a time of hope. Hope was created when God made the world. Then, because of sin, hope was lost. But Jesus being born represents Hope being found again- because Jesus would die on a cross for us and give us the chance to be back into a right relationship with God. Christmas is a time to thank God for that gift. and maybe for the first time, see what hopeless place we are in, and turn to God to find hope.
It was a great night!

All Area Dodgeball

Posted November 16th, 2011 in Berkner, Multicultural, Pearce, RAYL, Richardson by Todd

On Monday night, around 400 students showed up for an All-Area Dodgeball Tournament. It was truly “controlled chaos”. Kids from each school got dressed up by grade and came out with the hopes of bringing YL bragging rights home to their school. It was a great night and will hopefully build momentum for the final month of club.
While the dodgeball games were exciting, the highlight of the night was when past leader, now committee member Bryan Plantes got up to share how God has changed his life. He clearly showed explained that when he came to know Christ, it changed who he Worshiped, which changed his Wants, ultimately changing his Walk. God transforms us from this inside out.
